COLUMBUS — Devin McCuin was No. 40 in receiving yards among just Group of Six pass-catchers last year. He was good, but he wasn’t close to being the most productive among his peers. Still, there was something there that Ohio State head coach Ryan Day couldn’t ignore.
“I remember watching the film of him against Texas A&M, and he was competing his tail off out there,” Day said last week.
The stat line from UTSA’s loss to Texas A&M last year is unremarkable. McCuin had six catches for 33 yards. However, on those six catches, McCuin forced four missed tackles. While his team was overwhelmed, McCuin — a speedster at the G6 level — still looked fast on the field with A&M’s Power Four athletes. The senior has always been eager to prove himself on that kind of stage. Ohio State is going to give him the opportunity to do it this year.
McCuin had six receptions for 97 yards and a touchdown in the Buckeyes’ season-opening win against Ball State last week. When asked about his performance, McCuin got out about 20 words before immediately pivoting, unprovoked, to what’s ahead this week.
“It was nice to get that first touchdown out of the way,” McCuin said, “and now it’s time to go play ball next Saturday.”
