Great pod this morning on Jeremiah and Carnell! Thank you.
Question- is this observation wrong, or am I seeing it correctly that Julian is just a little bit more accurate when he is throwing to the left side of the field than when he is throwing to the right? I thought I saw this against Illinois and was kind of looking for it against Wisconsin.
Then… two of the deep underthrown balls to Jeremiah were both on the right. I’m pretty sure two of Carnell’s recent “toe-tapping” catches were on the left.
Yeah I don’t know. The throw to Inniss in the end zone was ridiculous and that was to Sayin’s right. I do think he’s the best OSU QB I’ve seen at going left, squaring his shoulders and throwing it accurately. From the pocket? I’m not sure it matter what side he’s throwing to
In my opinion Smith’s “reduced” performance or Carnell looking as good as him might just be Tate taking a 3rd season jump, which makes him look better than before (because he is) and makes Smith look less incredible because there’s only so many times you can throw the ball, and Tate is now taking a chunk of those targets. Also Smith is absolutely being affected by defences scheming specifically against him, while Tate doesn’t get the same treatment. I wouldn’t be shocked to see teams start to realize they need to account for Tate and Smith’s numbers will start to rise again in the second half of the season.
It's not that complicated. If JJ had half a dozen or so highlight reel type catches this season with the exact same statistics. Fans would be content (or at least as content as Buckeye fans can get). It's the sparsity of wow plays that gets fans worried.
Although the podcast was informative and thorough I didn’t like it. I don’t care about individual stats, end of season honors and so forth. I care about the team. I definitely like learning more about the game. I care about the behavior of the players both on and off the field. That’s why I am not a fan of the Cooper era and wear scarlet sweater vests to this very day. I see that CajunBuckeye did like the pod. Did you two enjoy doing it?
The point of my remark is that the episode was that I found the pod much less about football and more about possibility of Cain and Able set against a scarlet and grey background along the banks of the Olentangy. I didn't see how to add a nifty Cain and Able graphic but I do have the link to an html rendering. https://www.biblestudytools.com/bible-stories/cain-and-abel.html
Philip, I’m completely with you on Cooper and I too have a prized sweater vest! One of the things I liked about the pod was digging in on whether Jeremiah might be upset or frustrated… not just from the “human” side of the players but also because team culture is Huge…it can make or break the ultimate performance on the field if the locker room is hanging together versus petty infighting. (I’ve got suspicions that Penn State’s locker room had problems long before we saw it show up in California)
CB, I will be extremely disappointed if I learn that Buckeyes have gone from a team of deeply committed Christians to selfish and jealous, uber talented young men. I'm all for the uber talented part.
I kind of think the whole angst (if you want to call it that) about Smith comes down to the contested catch stat.
Coming into the year you would think if you throw a 50/50 ball to Smith he catches it 75% of the time, that is why he was so amazing. The fact that it's 2 of 10 and many of those would have been big, highlight plays that didn't happen I think has people second guessing a bit. Obviously he's great, but is he really significantly better than Marvin Harrison (who many agreed was the best receiver in OSU history just a couple of years ago) or more "merely" on the same level as guys like Harrison?
If he was 5/10 on contested catches with 3 additional highlight reel plays and a couple more TD's I think he'd be top 5 Heisman right now. If he was 7 or 8 of 10 on those plays, I think he might be leading... If he gets hot and can go 10 of 12 the rest of the year, to match his total stats (12/22) from last year I think he makes it to New York.

Where are you pulling yards per route run?

Yes. We like talking about football

Phil, you are overthinking it my friend
Doug, I’m not convinced that what I was doing rises to the level of thinking.
I thought we talked about football and really only talked about Jeremiah, so not sure about the biblical implications
