COLUMBUS — It’s Week 2 of our schedule breakdowns, as the Ohio State Buckeyes will visit Texas for what once again may be the best September game in college football.
The Buckeyes and Longhorns have played five times previously, and never has one of the teams been ranked outside the Top 10. That will be the case again this year.

The teams have played five times, with the Buckeyes holding a 3-2 edge. Almost all of them have been tremendous games. The 10 national rankings in the games were 1, 1, 2, 2, 3, 3, 3, 4, 6 and 10. Ridiculous. And this season will probably be No. 1 Texas vs. No. 3 Ohio State.
• Sept. 10, 2005: No. 2 Texas beats No. 4 Ohio State 25-22. Matchup in Ohio Stadium, Vince Young leads Texas to victory with a TD drive in the final three minutes.
• Sept. 9, 2006: No. 1 Ohio State beats No. 2 Texas 24-7. In the first of three 1-2 matchups for the Buckeyes in 2006, Troy Smith launches his Heisman campaign with a win over the Longhorns and new QB Colt McCoy.
• Jan. 5, 2009: No. 3 Texas beats No. 10 Ohio State 24-21 in the Fiesta Bowl. McCoy throws for 414 yards and engineers a game-winning drive, hitting Quan Cosby with a 26-yard touchdown with 16 seconds left.
• Jan. 19, 2025: No. 6 Ohio State (the 8 seed, but sixth-ranked team) beats No. 3 Texas 24-14 in a College Football Playoff semifinal in the Cotton Bowl. Jack Sawyer Scoop and Score.
• Aug. 30, 2025: No. 3 Ohio State beats No. 1 Texas 14-7 to open the season. The OSU defense shuts down Arch Manning.
