IOWA CITY, Iowa — Thoughts on Ohio State’s 31-14 win over Iowa on Saturday.
• Jeremiah Smith broke the two remaining Ohio State receiving records, taking down both the receptions mark and the touchdown receptions record. (He broke the yardage mark in Week 3). He needed 10 catches to pass Emeka Egbuka’s mark of 205 receptions and two touchdown catches to break Chris Olave’s record of 35.
Smith got the touchdown record on a 57-yard deep corner route in the third quarter, after scoring at the end of the second quarter when he reached out with the ball at the goal line for a 12-yard score.
That second touchdown was his ninth catch. He got his record-breaking reception on the first play of the next series on an eight-yard catch.
He finished with 11 catches for 206 yards and two touchdowns.
• The Buckeyes scored in the final 15 seconds of the first half once again, as they have in every first half this season. This was a nine-play, 84-yard drive that started with 1:48 left in the half and was completed with 12 seconds left on a 12-yard catch and stretch by Smith. The drive was four runs, four passes and a Julian Sayin scramble. The Buckeyes subbed out their starting receivers, including Smith, and then got stuck with them on the sideline for four plays as the clock didn’t stop. They got them back in for a 6-yard Ja’Kobi Jackson run before the Smith touchdown.
