COLUMBUS — Ohio State was back on the grass fields outside the Woody Hayes Athletic Center on Friday for the second practice of fall camp. Here’s a running diary of everything I saw.

8:57 a.m.: Specialists and offensive linemen are already on the field getting loose. Presumed right tackle starter Austin Siereveld picks up a ball and uncorks a decent punt about 35 yards. If you know me, watching an offensive lineman punt is akin to watching the most beautiful sunset from the most serene beach setting you can imagine. Utterly mesmerizing.

But my attention is immediately diverted to a group of defensive linemen running onto the field. Among them is sophomore defensive tackle Eddrick Houston with a sleeve brace on his right knee.

Houston went down at the end of Thursday’s opening practice, seemingly hyperextending that knee during a team period. Head coach Ryan Day didn’t have an immediate update on Houston’s status following the practice. Later on Thursday, ESPN’s Pete Thamel was first to report that Houston isn’t expected to be out long-term. The fact that he was at practice and not using crutches or a scooter to get around is a good sign that Ohio State could have him back sooner rather than later.

Today, he’s mostly a spectator. But his presence reinforces that the Buckeyes avoided a worst-case scenario situation on Day 1.
