COLUMBUS — Three things we learned from Ohio State head coach Ryan Day on Monday as he previewed the Buckeyes College Football Playoff quarterfinal game against Miami in the Cotton Bowl on Dec. 31.
1. Day confirmed on Monday what has felt inevitable. Offensive coordinator Brian Hartline will not call the plays in the postseason as he balances his current job with Ohio State and his future job as the new head coach at South Florida.
“It’s such a strange calendar, and the timing is brutal,” Day said. “He’s handling it great. He’s going to coach the receivers. It’s a lot on his plate. It will be my decision what calls go into the game. I wanted to take that off of Brian’s plate because he has so much going on with what he’s trying to do.”
This was the only logical outcome once Hartline took the USF job.
