COLUMBUS — A couple of things we learned from Ryan Day on Monday after Ohio State held its 15th practice of preseason camp.
1. We thought this would be the day when Day would officially declare Ohio State’s starting offensive line. He stopped short of that, but he also made it clear which direction things are headed.
Expect to see an offensive line of Ian Moore at left tackle, Luke Montgomery at left guard, Carson Hinzman at center, Austin Siereveld at right guard and Phillip Daniels at right tackle when the Buckeyes kick off the season against Ball State on Sept. 5.
“I would say going into this week, we still haven’t made any final decisions … It’s sort of trending in that direction,” Day said.
Since returning from an undisclosed injury that held him out of a few practices, Siereveld has been working at right guard, Day said. In fact, Day said Siereveld was mostly at right guard before missing time. This has always felt like the endgame, and while Day didn’t quite confirm that on Monday, it would be a shock to see anything other than this configuration in the opener.
I’ll write some more about the offensive line later this week. We’re supposed to talk with Siereveld for the first time this camp on Wednesday. But that was the O-line “news” of the day.
2. We’ve been trying to get a lay of the land at tight end, too. Day provided some clarity on that position.
