The Brady Edmunds Ohio State QB drama is over ... but Buckeye QB drama has been around for 25 years: A quarter century of history

What might seem like a problem in the moment is actually the norm when it comes to Ohio State quarterback acquisition.

COLUMBUS — So Brady Edmunds committed to Ohio State in December 2024, then, after a winding road of the QB visiting UCLA and the Buckeyes looking at other options, recommitted to Ohio State on Thursday.

Did you get your fill of quarterback recruiting drama over the last few months, when Edmunds and Ohio State were dancing around each other, still engaged but somehow playing the field?

Well … that’s how it always goes around here.

Complicated quarterback recruitments that often start one place and end in other, and sometimes lead to guys who weren’t Plan A turning into Buckeye QB starters, is the norm. A drama-filled few months that didn’t actually change anything is boring in Buckeye Nation.

Edmunds is the No. 234 player and No. 18 quarterback in the On3 rankings for 2027, ranked lower than he was when he committed, but still a Top-20 guy. With two 5-stars on the roster in Julian Sayin and Tavien St. Clair, and a 5-star targeted in 2028, he’s still a reasonable fit.

QB recruiting is like this plenty of places — quarterback evaluation remains possibly the most difficult task in sports, especially when you’re looking at teenagers. But in the moment, it can still feel like something is going wrong. Actually, it’s going normal.

Edmunds was Plan A in the Class of 2027 for Ohio State quarterback recruiting, joining an illustrious list of OSU Plan A QBs over the last two decades that includes Dylan Raiola, Brock Glenn, Jack Miller, Dwan Mathis, Emory Jones, Danny Clark and Tristen Wallace.

Here’s a look at the last 26 QB recruiting classes for Ohio State, from 2027 back to 2002, when a familiar quarterback name took a winding road to Columbus.

Two of these 26 classes didn’t have quarterback recruits. For the other 24, I rated the QB recruiting on a Drama Scale of 1-10, with 1 being low drama and 10 being high drama.

The average is 6.5. But there are plenty of 8s, 9s and 10s in there.
