What Brian Hartline's departure for USF means for Ohio State
The Buckeyes offensive coordinator and receivers coach is getting his first head coaching opportunity.

COLUMBUS — Ryan Day was not asked specifically to comment on the departure of Ohio State offensive coordinator and receivers coach Brian Hartline for the head coaching job at South Florida when he said the following, but there are no accidents when a coach of Day’s stature is speaking in a setting like Wednesday’s National Signing Day press conference that doubled as an update on where the Buckeyes go in light of Hartline’s new opportunity.
Day had a message to get out, one shared with him by former OSU coaches Jim Tressel and Urban Meyer when Day got the head coaching job in 2019.
“This job is bigger than any one person,” he said. “Ohio State has been good for a long time, and will continue to be good moving forward.”
Hartline, the country’s best position coach and recruiter, is leaving. There will likely be a short-term impact on Ohio State’s recruiting efforts. Otherwise, the train keeps moving.
